About Brent Hinds

Brent Hinds co-founded Mastodon in Atlanta in 2000 with Troy Sanders, Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor, and was one of its two guitarists and a lead singer. The band's breakthrough came with Leviathan in 2004, and Blood Mountain in 2006 earned a Grammy nomination; Emperor of Sand in 2017 and Once More 'Round the Sun in 2014 both topped the Billboard Rock Albums chart. Hinds played the more melodic and harmonizing parts, while Kelliher handled the main riffs. He left Mastodon in March 2025 and died in August 2025 at the age of 51.

He was strongly associated with the Gibson Flying V, favoring silverburst finishes; his main V was commissioned from Gibson in 2005 with Classic '57 humbuckers and strung with D'Addario 60-gauge sets for the band's low tunings. He also owned Les Pauls, SGs, Explorers, a Lucite V from the Electric Guitar Company and a Silverburst '83 SG, and had two custom First Act guitars.

In 2016 Epiphone released the Brent Hinds Flying V Custom, a limited edition with a silverburst finish, a mahogany body and neck and Lace USA Hammer Claw humbuckers that he helped design.
