About Down
Down is a New Orleans heavy metal supergroup in which Kirk Windstein and Pepper Keenan share the guitar parts. Windstein's gear lists include a white Gibson Explorer along with several ESP models: a Viper 400, a custom-painted Viper and an Eclipse II. Sources disagree on Keenan's main guitars: one gear list names an ESP Custom Shop SG and an ESP Viper baritone, and a Killer Guitar Rigs article says he moved from his old Gibsons to ESP, with guitars that he and Woody Weatherman had made years ago and that are now heavily worn.
User-submitted databases also credit a Gibson Firebird Studio and an Ampeg SS-150H amp, which contradicts those accounts and is unverified. Guitar tone is described as dirty and overdriven; the NOLA album dates from 1995.
Windstein and Keenan entered OCD Recording in Metairie, Louisiana to begin tracking guitars for a new album slated for 2026. Guitar Radar follows the band's releases and gear.
