About Joan Jett

Joan Jett's guitar identity is her white Gibson Melody Maker, which she bought in 1977 and has said she used in the Runaways and on hits such as I Love Rock 'n' Roll, Bad Reputation and Do You Wanna Touch Me. She has called it her baby and said it was light and sounded great.

Gibson built a Joan Jett Signature Melody Maker, developed closely with her, with a lightweight slab mahogany double-cutaway body in a Worn White finish, a slim-tapered neck with an ebony fingerboard, a silk-screened gold logo and mini Grover tuners with "witch hat" knobs. Her original guitar carried a Red Rhodes Velvet Hammer pickup that is no longer made, so Gibson substituted a Burstbucker 3, and the production model has a killswitch for stutter effects and a stopbar tailpiece.

Gibson has also made a Joan Jett signature ES-335 with a Burstbucker 3 in the bridge position and a signature ES-339. She has been seen playing a 2016 ES-335 Figured Cherry live since at least June 2017, and a Melody Maker has served as a backup. Guitar Radar follows Gibson's signature releases and reissues.
