About Railroad Earth

Railroad Earth is a roots and bluegrass-influenced band formed in 2001 in New Jersey. It grew out of informal jams: Todd Sheaffer, Tim Carbone and Andy Goessling met at Pocono Bluegrass Society open mics and kept playing at Goessling's house, then added the multi-instrumentalist John Skehan, with bassist Dave Von Dollen and drummer Carey Harmon completing the first lineup. The name borrows from Jack Kerouac's poem October in the Railroad Earth.

Sheaffer, previously the frontman of the Jersey roots act From Good Homes, is the main songwriter and sings and plays guitar and harmonica. Carbone plays violin, with accordion and guitar, Skehan plays mandolin and later bouzouki and wrote the 11-minute instrumental Spring-Heeled Jack for the 2010 self-titled album, and Goessling was a multi-instrumentalist on guitar, banjo, dobro, mandolin, flute, pennywhistle and saxophones who is now listed as deceased. The bass chair changed over the years, with Andrew Altman replacing Johnny Grubb in 2010.

I found no specific gear brands or models in the sources I reviewed. Guitar Radar follows the band's releases and tours.
