About Sleep
Sleep is the stoner-doom band of guitarist Matt Pike and bassist Al Cisneros, known for the long, slow riffs of Dopesmoker, also released under the title Jerusalem. The sound depends on huge, low-tuned amplification: Pike and Cisneros used Laney and Orange amps in the early years, then discovered the Matamp "Green" while on tour in England, and reportedly had custom Green amps made while recording Dopesmoker, paid for by an advance from their record label.
Cisneros no longer owns the Sleep-era Green equipment, and his later amps were built for his band Om. Pike has described a fat guitar sound made by daisy-chaining three Pignose amps, with a Soldano G.T.O. pedal driving the front of them, and says that it is all over the Sleep record. His other amps have included Orange Thunderverbs and Dual Darks and a Pignose 7-100.
Pike plays Gibson Les Pauls, including 3-humbucker Custom and Artisan models, and tunes to C standard. Gear lists for the band come from interviews and community databases, so treat them as approximate.
