About Slipknot
Slipknot's guitar sound is built on its two guitarists, Mick Thomson and Jim Root, both of whom have signature instruments. Thomson's current signature guitars are Ibanez MTM models with a mahogany body, maple neck and rosewood fretboard, fitted with Seymour Duncan EMTY Blackout pickups. On the band's first album he played a custom Jackson V he had owned since he was 19, fitted with EMG pickups, recorded through a Rocktron Piranha into a Mesa/Boogie 295 power amp. For All Hope Is Gone he used a Marshall JCM800 2203 with a Maxon overdrive.
Root's signature is the Fender Jim Root Telecaster, which carries EMG 60 and EMG 81 pickups, and a white version was released in 2008. His pedals have included an Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer, an MXR Custom Comp for clean channels and a wah. A diagram of his rig in 2000 shows a Carvin 4x12 cabinet.
Thomson's rack has included Audio-Technica wireless units, a Furman power conditioner, a Boss GT-Pro and a Dunlop rack wah. Rigs change between albums and tours, so treat any list as a snapshot. Guitar Radar follows Slipknot's signature models and tour gear.
