About Stu Mackenzie
Stu Mackenzie is the guitarist and singer of the Australian band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and the main driver behind its microtonal experiments. For the 2017 album Flying Microtonal Banana he asked the luthier Zac Eccles to add extra frets to a banana-yellow guitar, which allowed him to play quarter-tones in set keys. The band also modified guitars and basses with extra frets, re-pitched vintage keyboards, modified a Yamaha DX7 and even altered a harmonica.
His guitars include a Yamaha SG-2 he picked up in 2013, whose odd, noisy pickups cause interesting microphonic glitches, and he has been seen with a white Fender Stratocaster, an American Standard Stratocaster and a Hagstrom.
Premier Guitar describes a fairly straightforward pedalboard, with about 70 percent of the set played with no effects: a Boss TU-3 tuner and DD-3T delay, a Devi Ever Aenima, a JAM Pedals Boomster, a Fender Tread-Light Wah and a Dunlop Volume (X) Mini. His amps are Fender Hot Rod DeVilles and a Roland JC-120.
