BOSS has introduced the EX-4 Effects Expander, a compact processor built to add a large library of effects to an existing pedalboard. It offers 120 effect types and can run four simultaneously, with dedicated utility blocks for send/return, noise suppression, volume and signal splitting/mixing.
The routing is the more interesting part than the raw effect count. Four audio jacks can work as stereo I/O or turn two connections into an effects loop, allowing external pedals to be inserted inside the EX-4 chain. TRS MIDI, external footswitch/expression support, 128 user memories and a 2.4-inch color display push it toward players who want a small programmable hub without abandoning their favorite individual pedals.
BOSS says the EX-4 will be available in October at $299.99.

Why it matters
It targets a useful middle ground between a conventional multi-effects unit and a curated pedalboard: a compact programmable effects/routing layer that can coexist with standalone pedals.
