About Aerosmith
Aerosmith's guitar story belongs to two players, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford. The band began when Perry and Tom Hamilton's Jam Band was joined by Steven Tyler, Whitford and Joey Kramer, and Perry was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Aerosmith in 2001. Both used Gibson Les Pauls and Fender Telecasters over the decades, and by the mid-to-late 1970s both had Bill Lawrence pickups fitted.
Perry's best-known guitar is a 1959 Les Paul that was his main guitar in the 1970s and which he sold in December 1981 when he was broke. Gibson later issued the Joe Perry Boneyard Les Paul, with a custom Green Tiger finish and aged nickel hardware. His collection has been put at more than 600 guitars, and a 2012 Premier Guitar tour rundown listed the Billy 335, a Dan Armstrong Lucite guitar and a B.C. Rich 10-string Bich.
Whitford has used Gibson Custom Shop Tom Murphy reissue Les Pauls, Fender Custom Shop Strats and Teles, and an Epiphone Casino. He founded 3 Monkeys Amplification, and his tone centers on a PRS amp, with a pedalboard that includes a Crybaby wah, a Seymour Duncan Tweak Fuzz and an original Marshall Guv'nor. Tour rigs change, so details are from specific years.
