About Dan Auerbach
Dan Auerbach is the guitarist and singer of The Black Keys, with a rig built mostly on vintage, inexpensive and unusual instruments. His best-known guitar is the Harmony H78, which his guitar tech says is totally hollow, has gold-foil pickups and has been used for several years, still coming out for two-piece songs in the middle of a set. Gear lists also name Silvertone 1454 and Harmony H77 models from the late 1960s and a Harmony Stratotone H47 with Lindy Fralin P-90s.
A Supro Martinique with a fiberglass body appears often in the studio, and National resonator guitars show up on Delta-blues numbers. Other guitars include a Fender Jerry Donahue Telecaster, a Gibson Firebird VII, a Les Paul Standard with a Bigsby and a Gibson ES-335 Trini Lopez signature seen with The Arcs. Reverb says he keeps a 1964 Guild Thunderbird on hand.
Amplifier lists include Fender Twin Reverbs, Marshall JTM45 reissues, a Magnatone and a Victoria Dual Deluxe, with fuzzes such as a Green Russian Big Muff and a Shin-Ei Companion Fuzz. These lists date from earlier tours, and some newer guides contradict each other, so his current rig may differ.
