About Dave Grohl
Dave Grohl is the singer and guitarist of Foo Fighters and was the drummer of Nirvana. His guitar sound is built around a Gibson Trini Lopez: his first was a 1967 model in cherry red that he reportedly bought at a shop in Bethesda, Maryland around 1992 or 1993, while still in Nirvana. He has said it is the sound of the Foo Fighters, and it was used heavily on every Foo Fighters record before being largely retired from live use.
Gibson's Custom Shop built his signature model with his input, the DG-335, based on the ES-335 with a Firebird-style headstock and diamond-shaped f-holes inspired by the Trini Lopez. It was made from 2007 to 2014, and Epiphone later released a version too. Pelham Blue is the finish he uses most live, though Gibson also made black and metallic gold versions. Sources disagree about which Burstbucker pickups the original run carried.
His rig is fairly minimal and no single guitar is essential to his tone. He has also played a Dimebag Darrell Washburn Dime 333 Dimebolt, notably in the Tenacious D film The Pick of Destiny and at the 2000 Big Day Out, and a Silvertone at Glastonbury in 2022; a Phase 90 appears prominently on Breakout.
