About Justin Broadrick

Justin Broadrick is an English guitarist, vocalist and programmer whose career began as a teenager in the grindcore band Napalm Death in the mid-1980s. After short stints in Fall of Because and Head of David he formed Godflesh in Birmingham in 1988 with bassist G. C. Green, and he later made music under the Jesu name, using eight-string guitars.

His rig has changed little since the early days: a Japanese-made Fender Stratocaster tuned down to C sharp and an old Marshall JCM800. He has described a custom Japanese Strat with a rare locked-tuning setup that works well for downtuning. A fan-gear page lists a Schecter signature BTK8 model, but that page is user-compiled and garbled, so treat its details as unverified. The band's drum machine on early records was an Alesis HR-16, with which Broadrick stacked kick drums for a low, raw sound.

He has recently played guitar on a Phoebe Bridgers album, which Guitar World covered, and has announced the end of Godflesh, with the final album Decay planned for September 2026, because of the effects of hernia surgery on his ability to scream.
