Justin Broadrick has said Godflesh are coming to an end after nearly four decades, with two final albums planned: Decay followed by The End. In a September 3 interview with The Guardian, the guitarist linked the decision partly to the physical toll of performing and partly to a wish to move beyond the creative boundaries he associates with Godflesh.
Broadrick underwent surgery in 2026 after developing a large hernia, and the interview frames the band's retirement as a practical as well as artistic decision. He is not stepping away from making music: a new project called White Light District is intended to explore industrial sound and texture outside a conventional band format.
The change closes a major chapter in industrial guitar music while opening another one for a player whose work has stretched from Napalm Death and Godflesh to Jesu and recent collaborations outside heavy music.

Why it matters
Godflesh's planned ending is a significant career change for one of industrial metal's most influential guitarists, while White Light District points directly to what Broadrick wants to explore next.
