About Mike Campbell
Mike Campbell is the guitarist and co-writer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and later of his own band, the Dirty Knobs. He is known for a very wide set of guitars, with favorites including a Les Paul gold top, a Fender Stratocaster, a California Classic Telecaster and three Rickenbacker twelve-strings. His Les Paul was used on Don't Come Around Here No More through a distortion pedal, an octaver, a wah and an Ampeg amp, and he has also talked about a 1959 Les Paul burst.
His "Broadcaster" is a 1950 Fender he bought at Nadine's Music in Hollywood when the band was struggling, though sources differ on its exact identity. A Rickenbacker twelve-string is used on Free Fallin', a Gretsch 6186 Clipper tuned to open G on I Won't Back Down, and a Rickenbacker-style mandolin nicknamed "Little Ricky" has a whammy bar.
The bulk of his tone comes from a 1963 Fender Princeton and a 1954 Fender tweed Deluxe, plus a custom Fender Excelsior and a Fender Vibratone for Leslie-type effects. His rig rundowns describe a tour; the sources did not cover the gear used with the Dirty Knobs.
