About Aguilar

Aguilar Amplification was founded in New York in 1995 by Dave Boonshoft, a working bassist, and technician Alex Aguilar, who had earlier worked with Roger Sadowsky on his bass preamps. The first product was the all-tube DB 680 preamp, built to bring studio-grade quality to bass; DB stands for Boonshoft's initials, and the 680 nods to the Fairchild 670 compressor. A power amp, the DB 728, followed to drive it, and then heads and cabinets.

Products now range from heads and cabinets to preamps and pedals, with the DB series of voiced cabinets and the lightweight SL series. The DB 751 is a hybrid head with a tube preamp and a solid-state power section that can deliver up to 975 watts, and the compact Tone Hammer 500 is rated at 500 watts. Alex Aguilar later left the company that bears his name.

Korg USA acquired Aguilar, and the company was renamed Aguilar Musical Instruments LLC at the start of 2021, with Boonshoft staying on as a consultant in product development. Guitar Radar follows new Aguilar bass amps and pedals.
