About Gibson Custom
Gibson Custom is the division of Gibson that builds the company's high-end reissues, artist replicas and special runs. The Custom Shop began in Nashville in 1983 inside Gibson's main plant and moved to a separate facility in 1993. That year Gibson also hired Tom Murphy and J.T. Riboloff to lead its Custom, Art and Historic division, and Murphy and Riboloff studied and measured more than two dozen historic Les Paul Standards.
The Historic Collection is made up of exact reproductions of significant Gibson instruments, including Les Pauls, SGs, Firebirds and large jazz archtops. In March 2021 Gibson announced the Murphy Lab, a part of the Nashville shop devoted entirely to aging guitars, with four levels of wear from Ultra-Light to Ultra-Heavy; the guitars are built first and then aged by artisans Murphy has trained.
