About Taylor

Taylor Guitars began in 1974, when Bob Taylor, Kurt Listug and Steve Schemmer took over a small guitar shop in San Diego County, California, where Taylor and Listug had started working the year before. Taylor was the craftsman and Listug the business mind; they put the Taylor name on the headstock because Bob was the chief builder. Their guitars first went to outside dealers in 1976.

The company moved to Santee in 1987 and bought its first CNC machine in 1989, with Bob Taylor widely credited for bringing computer mills and lasers into acoustic guitar building. In 2011 he hired luthier Andy Powers to lead guitar design, and Powers became a third owner in 2019.

Taylor is headquartered in El Cajon and builds guitars in two factories, in El Cajon and in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico. The company is now owned entirely by its employees. Guitar Radar follows Taylor's new series, signature models, limited editions and its pickups and electronics.
