About VOX
Vox was founded by Thomas Walter Jennings in Dartford, Kent, after the Second World War; its first hit was the Univox, an early electronic keyboard, and the company later operated as Jennings Musical Industries (JMI). After engineer Dick Denney showed Jennings a prototype guitar amplifier, JMI released the 15-watt AC15 in 1958, with two EL84 power tubes.
The Shadows found the AC15 too quiet for big venues, which led to the louder 30-watt, two-speaker AC30 in 1959. Its chiming top end made it central to the British Invasion sound, and Wikipedia lists the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks, Yardbirds, Queen, Dire Straits, U2 and Radiohead among its users.
The company passed through several owners after 1964, among them Royston Industries, Dallas Arbiter and Rose Morris, and the AC30 almost ceased production in the mid-1980s because of a shortage of good tubes. Since 1992 Vox has been owned by Korg. Guitar Radar follows Vox's amps, its Satchurator and wah pedals, and modeling products.
