Classical guitarist An Tran released Ilumina on August 28 through Prima Classic, an album built entirely from music written for him. The 13 tracks are all world-premiere recordings, each commissioned from a composer Tran has a personal connection with, and the program moves from small domestic themes toward wider emotional territory.
Two pieces draw directly on Vietnamese source material: a Toccata on the folk song "Lý Kéo Chài" and a set of variations and fugue on "Ru Em," a Xê Đăng lullaby. The title, meaning roughly "to shine a light," frames the record as a survey of new voices for the instrument rather than a repertoire recital.
New-music albums are a hard sell in classical guitar, where recording schedules lean heavily on the standard canon. A full album of commissions from a player still building an international profile is a bet on expanding what the instrument's recorded literature looks like.
