Billy Strings turns grief into flatpicking on 'So Much For Goodbyes'

The bluegrass guitarist's fifth studio album, produced with T Bone Burnett and released August 28, was written after his mother's death and carries her artwork on the cover.

Billy Strings released 'So Much For Goodbyes' on August 28 through Reprise Records, and it is the most personal record he has made. The 16 songs came out of the period after his mother, Debra Apostol, died in 2025, and the cover uses a piece of her own artwork. T Bone Burnett co-produced with Strings.

For guitarists, the draw is the same as ever: Strings' flatpicking, which even skeptics tend to concede is startling, backed by a drummerless quartet that still manages to drive hard. Reviews out of the release have been warm, with The Guardian singling out the picking and the band's momentum.

Strings framed the album around the guitar itself as a way through loss. He has said he leaned on the instrument "as a coping mechanism as I always have." The lead single, 'Burn the Other End,' co-written with Paul Hoffman of Greensky Bluegrass, arrived in late June with an official video.
