Richard Thompson released Hippies, Thugs and Heroes on October 16 through New West Records. The 12-song album arrives two years after Ship To Shore and places Thompson’s guitar work inside a set that moves between folk-rock, bar-room drive and quieter acoustic writing. The official Bandcamp edition is available as a $10 digital album, while vinyl and CD versions are also shipping.
Thompson recorded the album at Hobosound Studio in Weehawken, New Jersey, with bassist Taras Prodaniuk, drummer Michael Jerome and guitarist-fiddler David Mansfield. Zara Phillips adds harmony vocals, while a small horn section and accordion players broaden the arrangements. The sessions were kept deliberately quick, often reaching a finished take within two to four passes, after Thompson had prepared fuller home demos that carried more of his own instrumental ideas into the room.
That process can be heard in the range of the track list. “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” starts from bright 12-string textures, “Cocaine Walking, Booze Talking” pushes toward a splintered electric solo, and the closing stretch includes the bluesier “Stringer” and the solo-acoustic “Siren.” Thompson also plays mandolin, organ and harmonium, and shares production credit with engineer James Frazee.
For guitar listeners, the useful thread is not nostalgia but method: an established songwriter used detailed demos to sharpen the direction, then trusted a working band to capture the performances quickly. The result documents Thompson’s current electric and acoustic language without sanding away the interaction that comes from musicians playing together.

Why it matters
Thompson’s 20th solo studio album offers a clear look at how one of British folk-rock’s defining guitarists balances arranged demos with live ensemble playing.
