A previously unreleased 1974 Van Halen demo titled ‘Glitter’ is set to receive its first official release on the seven-inch picture disc bundled with Alex Van Halen’s signed limited-edition book. The recording features Alex and Eddie Van Halen with David Lee Roth and original bassist Mark Stone. According to the announcement, ‘Glitter’ will become the earliest Van Halen recording officially made available. The record’s other side contains a spoken-word selection from Alex Van Halen’s interviews for the book, and the signed edition is limited to 1,500 numbered copies. For guitar listeners, the appeal is historical rather than merely collectible: this is a documented recording from the band’s formative 1974 lineup, before the catalog that made Eddie Van Halen one of rock guitar’s defining figures.
Why it matters
An officially released recording from Van Halen’s earliest period adds a genuinely new primary document to the history of one of rock guitar’s most influential bands.
