A new international guitar festival was formally presented in Cádiz on September 22. The first Festival Internacional de Guitarra de Cádiz Ángel G. Piñero will run from October 22 to November 8, placing 13 free concerts in 11 venues across Cádiz, Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Rota.

Created and produced by the European Guitar Foundation, the festival is built around the legacy of Cádiz guitarist, composer, teacher and researcher Ángel G. Piñero. Artistic director Vicente Coves has assembled a program spanning solo recitals, flamenco and cante, chamber music, voice and multi-guitar formats, with performers from several countries and five concerts tied to winners of the Ángel G. Piñero International Classical Guitar Competition.

The opening is set for October 22 with Luca Romanelli in Cádiz; the wider program includes Ricardo Fernández del Moral, Jony Jiménez with Antonio Reyes, Sohta Nakabayashi, Jerónimo Maya, Alejandro Hurtado with Quartett HANA and María Esther Guzmán. The inaugural edition is explicitly presented as a continuing international project rather than a one-off concert series.

Why it matters

This is a genuinely new guitar-specific festival with a substantial multi-city program, free admission and a mix of classical, flamenco and younger competition-linked players — exactly the kind of regional development an English-language guitar-news sweep can miss.
