About Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam formed in Seattle in 1990, and its two main guitarists divide the work: Mike McCready plays lead, mostly on Fender Stratocasters, and Stone Gossard supplies rhythm on Gibson Les Pauls. McCready is best known for a 1960 Stratocaster, of which Fender has made a Custom Shop replica, and a 1959 Les Paul. On Ten he used a '62 reissue Strat that he received from Gossard and Jeff Ament when he joined the band; he smashed it at a Mad Season concert in 1995. On Hunger Strike he used the fourth pickup position for the soft opening and the neck pickup for the heavier section.

Gossard's main guitar is a Les Paul sunburst with a Bigsby vibrato, and on tour he has also played a rare Gibson Les Paul Signature semi-hollow goldtop, a late-1960s design that was the fourth and last guitar Les Paul developed with Gibson.

On recent tours McCready has used Fender Tone Master digital combos, a Deluxe Reverb and a Twin Reverb, together with a Lead Custom from the Seattle builder Rola running into a Marshall 4x12. Marshall amps have been used by both guitarists in other eras, so rig details change between tours.
