Soundgarden said on August 25 that they will perform at halftime of the Seattle Seahawks' season opener against the New England Patriots at Lumen Field on September 9. It is the band's first real stage appearance since their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction last November.
Guitarist Kim Thayil and the rest of Soundgarden will be joined by Pearl Jam's Mike McCready, and Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless will sing, a role she has taken with the band a handful of times since Chris Cornell's death in 2017. McCready is also down to play the national anthem before kickoff, appearing for the Washington Innocence Project.
There is no word on a wider tour. The hometown slot fits Soundgarden's Seattle roots and keeps the band working as a live act for the first time in years.
Why it matters
Thayil's detuned, dissonant riffing is a load-bearing part of the Seattle sound, and any Soundgarden set, even two songs at halftime, is a rare chance to hear it live again.
