About Tygers Of Pan Tang

Tygers of Pan Tang are a New Wave of British Heavy Metal band from Whitley Bay in northeast England, formed in 1978. The name comes from Pan Tang, a fictional archipelago in Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melniboné books whose wizards keep tigers as pets. Guitarist Robb Weir formed the early group with bassist Rocky Laws and drummer Brian Dick, and singer Jess Cox joined after meeting Weir in a pub in November 1978.

The first single, Don't Touch Me There, came out on the local label Neat Records in September 1979, followed by a major deal with MCA and the debut album Wild Cat in 1980. John Sykes was an important second guitarist in the MCA years before going on to Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake, and The Cage was their biggest commercial success, though the original band did not survive it.

The band split in 1987 and reformed in 1999, initially for a one-off show at Wacken Open Air; Weir has been the constant member throughout. The current lineup includes Weir, drummer Craig Ellis, singer Jacopo "Jack" Meille, bassist Huw Holding and guitarist John Foottit, and reviewers praised the 2024-era album Bloodlines.
