About ENGL

ENGL is a German amp maker from Tittmoning, a small town in southeast Bavaria, founded in 1983 by Edmund Engl, a musician rather than an engineer. He had the idea of a programmable guitar amplifier, and a technically skilled friend, Horst Langer, became its technical lead. At Musikmesse Frankfurt in 1984 the company showed its first programmable amplifier, which it calls a sensation.

Early products included the Straight and the Savage, and later the Powerball, which introduced an integrated noise gate, tube protection circuits and a serial amp control interface, and the Fireball and Invader lines, which became favorites among metal players. For its 40th anniversary in 2023, ENGL built a limited run of Fireball 100 and Fireball 25 amps at its Custom Shop in Germany, capped at 40 units.

ENGL says it keeps to Made in Germany quality standards, though some of its heads, combos and cabinets are built elsewhere. Guitar Radar follows new ENGL amps, limited editions and artist models.
