Sterling by Music Man has released the StingRay II, a guitar developed with Cory Wong that translates visual cues from the StingRay bass into a compact double-cutaway six-string. The production model is now available at $749.99.

Unlike the single-coil sounds most closely associated with Wong, the StingRay II uses two ceramic humbuckers. An alder body, roasted maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, 25.5-inch scale, 12-inch radius, locking tuners and vintage-style tremolo complete the design. Wong has described the collaboration as a way to add the thicker humbucker colors he felt were missing from his usual palette.

The result is less a lower-cost copy of his familiar Strat-style setup than a different branch of his signature gear, aimed at broader rock, R&B and rhythm-guitar territory.

Why it matters

It turns an earlier teased artist collaboration into an actually available, comparatively affordable signature guitar with a deliberately different pickup voice from Wong's best-known instruments.
