The Goldmund Quartet released Paganini: His Music, His Instruments on September 18 through Berlin Classics, with guitarist Carlotta Dalia joining for Paganini’s Guitar Quartet No. 15 in A minor, MS 42. The project centers on rarely heard chamber music rather than the familiar solo-violin showpieces.
Its unusual hook is physical as well as musical: five historical instruments once owned by Niccolò Paganini — two violins, viola, cello and guitar — were reunited and played together for the recording. The album also includes works such as the Sonata in A major, Op. 3 No. 1 and String Quartet No. 3 in A minor.
For classical guitarists, hearing Paganini’s chamber writing performed with the composer’s own guitar inside a matched historical-instrument context makes this more than a standard new-release item.
Why it matters
The recording gives guitarists a rare intersection of performance, instrument history and repertoire: Paganini’s own guitar is heard alongside four of his other instruments in music he wrote for chamber forces.
