About Gibson
Gibson is one of the oldest names in guitars. Orville Gibson began making carved, arched-top mandolins in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and the company was formally set up in 1902 to market his designs. Gibson introduced the Les Paul in 1952 in Custom, Standard, Special and Junior versions, the ES-335 semi-hollow in 1958, and its SG, Explorer and Flying V designs followed in the following years, alongside the humbucking pickup that defined its late-1950s sound.
Ownership changed hands several times (Chicago Musical Instruments bought the company in 1944, later part of Norlin) before the group was renamed Gibson Brands in 2013. Its headquarters are in Nashville, Tennessee, and its brands include Epiphone, Kramer, Steinberger and Tobias.
Gibson Custom, based in Bozeman, Montana and Nashville, groups the Historic Collection, Murphy Lab aging, artist signature models, small-batch Custom Select and Made to Measure instruments. Guitar Radar follows Gibson's Custom Shop reissues, signature models and limited runs.
