About Seymour Duncan
Seymour Duncan was founded in Santa Barbara, California in 1976 by guitarist and luthier Seymour W. Duncan and Cathy Carter Duncan, though some sources give the late 1970s. Duncan had worked in the repair department of the Fender Soundhouse in London in 1973, rewinding pickups for well-known players, and his early products from a 12-by-15-foot rented space included brass bridges for Telecasters.
The JB humbucker is the company's best seller and originated from a pickup Duncan made in 1974 after noticing Jeff Beck's hotter-than-usual pickups in his Les Paul; the name reportedly stands for Jazz Blues, although many assume it is a reference to Beck. Its neck partner, the Jazz, has been used by players including Randy Rhoads and Jeff Beck.
The company makes pickups at its factory in the Santa Barbara area and has also moved into effects pedals. In January 2026 it released a 50th Anniversary Limited Edition JB/Jazz set built with butyrate bobbins and rough-cast magnets. Guitar Radar follows new pickup lines, signature sets and pedals.
