About Yamaha

Yamaha's roots reach back to 1887, when founder Torakusu Yamaha repaired a broken reed organ; the company was established as Nippon Gakki in 1897 and later became Yamaha Corporation. Guitar production started later, and a dedicated guitar division was set up in 1966. The FG180 was its first acoustic of that era, and the FG series reached the United States in the late 1960s.

In electrics, its SG series, introduced in the late 1960s and built up around the SG-175 in 1974, became popular with players such as Carlos Santana, for whom Yamaha built a custom SG-175. The Pacifica range, launched in 1990 with Leo Knapp, became a standard entry-level electric guitar.

Today Yamaha's guitar catalog spans acoustics, the Pacifica and Revstar electrics and artist models. Guitar Radar follows its new Revstar variants and signature releases.
