The closing night of Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival on September 27 delivered the combinations the advance lineup could not reveal. John Mayer traded leads with Derek Trucks and Trey Anastasio, while Marcus King brought out Sierra Hull, Joe Bonamassa, Susan Tedeschi and Trucks across a set that reached from his own material to Led Zeppelin and Blind Faith.

Clapton’s set added John McLaughlin and Kurt Rosenwinkel before the wider cast returned for a finale, and earlier pairings connected Del McCoury’s bluegrass circle with Hull and Jerry Douglas, plus Robert Randolph with Eric Gales. That range makes the weekend recap a separate development from the already covered opening-night story: the news is what the assembled players actually built together.

Why it matters

Crossroads is most valuable when it creates combinations that do not exist on ordinary tour bills, and the second night produced exactly that kind of cross-generational guitar conversation.
